Immediately after being sworn in as the newest Justice on the Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson was awarded an honorary biology degree from her alma mater, Harvard. The move comes after an embarrassing confirmation process in which the judge refused to define what a woman is, claiming she was not a biologist.

Republicans called the honorary degree a transparent political stunt, timed right after the 53-47 Senate vote which confirmed the judge so that she could immediately lay claim to being the first Black woman Justice. Without the degree, she would have simply been the third Black Justice to serve on the Court.

“It has taken 232 years and 115 prior appointments for a Black woman to be selected to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States,”  an emotional Jackson said outside the White House. “It wouldn’t have been possible without Joe Biden standing in the way of much more qualified black women judges before me. Thankfully my judicial track record of grotesque leniency towards sex offenders and pedophiles won the old racist over.”
